Before receiving information about auditions
for Music in the Mountains PA, you must complete and return an application
form and $30 application fee. If you have not already done so, please
download and complete the application
form
(pdf) now. All applications are due by March 31st, except by special
arrangements.
Once we have received and processed your application and application
fee, you will be contacted about auditions. You should expect that
auditions will be in April unless otherwise informed. For students
living in the greater Philadelphia area, all auditions must be live.
For applicants who live farther than 30 miles from Philadelphia,
please contact Music in the Mountains PA. about the possibility of
submitting a CD, DVD, or making some other arrangements (see application
form for contact information). All instrumentalists may be asked
to play Major or minor scales in three octaves (four octaves for
piano). Additionally, all instrumentalists should prepare two contrasting
pieces or movements of a piece and should expect to do a little sight-reading.
Below you will find sample audition repertoire which is of appropriate
musical and technical difficulty based on your instrument.
• Violins: Audition repertoire should
include some of the following or comparable works:
› a movement of a Mozart concerto with
a cadenza
› Bruch, Concerto No. 1 in g minor
› some of one of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas
for solo violin
• Violas: Audition repertoire should
include some of the following or comparable works:
› Hummel, Fantasie for viola and orchestra
› Handel Concerto
› Stamitz Concerto
• Celli: Audition repertoire should
include some of the following or comparable works:
› Saint-Saens, Allegro Appassionato, Op.
43
› Saint-Saens, Cello Concerto No. 1 in
a minor
› some of Bach Suites #1, 2, or 3 for
solo cello
• Piano: Audition repertoire should
include some of the following or comparable works:
› A Bach three-part invention, Prelude
and Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier, or Suite.
› A major classical or romantic sonata,
except for Beethoven's Op. 49, Op. 79, and Mozart's K.545
So that applicants are aware, these auditions
are important in ascertaining students’ abilities to play the
6-9 movements of pieces that they will be required to learn while
at Music in the Mountains PA.
A sample of chamber music repertoire performed
at MIM includes:
• Mozart Piano Quartet in g minor
• some movements from Dvorak "Dumky"
Trio for piano, violin and cello
• Shostakovitch String Quartet #4
• various pieces for cello ensembles
• movements from Beethoven Serenade for
Violin, viola, and cello
• movements from Schumann Piano Quartet
Once you have auditioned and been accepted to Music in the Mountains
PA, the following will be the fee schedule:
• A $100 non-refundable deposit to hold
your place in the program will be due within two weeks of acceptance.
• The balance will be due by June 15th and will include the
following:
› $200
for lodging for two weeks
› $150
for dinners and activities for two weeks
› $750
for tuition for two weeks
The total cost for the two weeks, including
the $100 deposit, will be $1200.
A late fee of $25 will be incurred if paid after June 15th.
Q: Are there scholarships available?
A: Because we try to reduce costs as much as possible, there is not
a lot of extra funding available for scholarships to Music in the
Mountains PA. What limited assistance is available is based on financial
need. Please indicate if you need financial aid when you apply.
Q: How can I contribute to the scholarship fund?
A: You can contribute to the scholarship fund in the following ways.
• If you are planning on attending Music in the Mountains PA,
you may include with your own fees an extra check which will go directly
to the scholarship fund. You may also contact us to see what type
of need there is.
• If you are an alumnus/a of Music in the Mountains PA, or another
party interested in contributing to the scholarship fund, you may
send a check marked “scholarship fund” to 214 Avon Rd.
Narberth, PA 19072.
Because Music in the Mountains PA is a for-profit
institution, while we appreciate any contribution you are able to
make, it is not tax-deductible.
